Hey MONA, o-oh MONA

It's probably incredibly uncool to inflict travel photos on others but hey, I don't go places often and last weekend was a doozy.

Hobart...

What a swell city. Indulged in an art feast interspersed with food and drink. Too many wonderful galleries and artworks to mention in one humble post but the main reason for visiting was MONA. Wow.

Stories abound about the building, the works and of course the man himself - all fantastic, intriguing and highly entertaining. All I will say is that I enjoyed (nearly) every minute of my 5 hours spent underground... and its free!

That a man chooses to spend a fortune on art, then spends millions more building a museum to allow anyone and everyone the opportunity to experience the works in a  fantastical environment... well that's alright by me, whatever his bent. Good, bad, provocative or other, it's all subjective and it certainly gets you talking and thinking.

A few highlights...

James Angus, Truck corridor, 2004

Ah Xian, China China - Bust 82

Del Kathryn Barton (detail)

Although, I admit to being just as taken with Hobart's zinc factory...

and the powerful presence of a Sea Shepherd ship...

Great weekend all round really.

Last went to Hobart to meet my son home from Antarctica. Loved the Salmanca Place and the galleries along there. If I get there again I'll be looking for the MONA.
