Robust, sculptural, functional vessels

For a while now I have admired the work of ceramic artist Elise Bishop. Earlier this year she took part in an exhibition at Pan Gallery called The 48 Hour Clay Project . Four artists, from country Victoria, set themselves the challenge of digging their own clay, making something, building a kiln and firing the work, all within the time frame of 48 hours using only the tools and materials they had on their own properties. The spirit of these artists and the works they created was wonderful.

Since then Elise has left our shores to establish a home on Great Barrier Island, NZ. From all accounts the facilities are fairly basic. I vaguely remember her mentioning something along the lines of... "might need to get a generator if we want power"...

but here is the view from their back window...

And side window...

and this is their 'local' beach...

I have been so happy to receive the occasional update of how things are progressing and to see that Elise's work continues to capture the essence of the 48 Hour project - raw, immediate and intensely reflective of the environment she inhabits. And what a spectacular environment to have as an influence!

Here are a few beautiful examples of her recent work...
